What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a type of allied health support that assists children and adolescents in improving their abilities in everyday tasks, such as brushing their teeth or getting a job. OT helps children develop the confidence and independence to manage these activities independently.

OT also supports children in managing responsibilities and engaging in home, school, and community activities. Furthermore, OT promotes play during free time, a crucial element for learning, creativity, and well-being.

OT also aims to improve a child's physical skills, such as smoothing or making movements, body awareness, balance, coordination, and processing sensory information. This all-around approach supports children in developing skills and independence in their daily lives.

Our approach to OT

We take a holistic approach to OT, considering each child's physical, developmental, and emotional needs. Because we understand that each child is unique, we use a collaborative process that involves working closely with families to provide tailored strategies and support.

After an initial assessment, our OTs create an individual plan to support them in reaching their goals. The plan identifies areas for development and may include e
xercises to improve strength, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and emotional regulation strategies.

How can OT support my child?

Occupational therapy offers comprehensive support to children through a diverse range of intervention methods, tools, and strategies. Therapy focuses on each child's specific goals and offers practical assistance, helping them navigate daily tasks and interactions. This approach promotes independence, confidence and supports overall development and well-being.

Emotional

Regulation

Helping kids control their emotions is important for their wellbeing and development. We can do this through sensory integration, self-regulation strategies, therapeutic play, and more.

Development

We work on developing coordination, balance, and movement skills to help them with everyday activities like walking, running, and jumping.

Friends and Family Interactions

OT can help kids get along with their family members. If the child desires, OT can also help them develop skills to play with other kids and make new friends.

Sensory Processing

Knowing a child's sensory needs and figuring out how they process sensory information allows us to work together to develop strategies to support their development.

Independence & Self-Care

OT can help children develop self-care skills such as dressing, eating, toileting, personal hygiene, and independence.
